It's Everywhere

I have taken a new job at a charter school. This is the first time I have worked in a non-tribal school since I began my career. I have enjoyed the first couple of weeks and look forward to the day the students come to the school.

In the two weeks I have been here, I have seen evidence of the FASD epidemic. Just today, I interviewed a candidate for a position. This candidate spoke candidly about her adopted children and their disabilities. All the red flags were there. Another person identified FASD as the root cause of her adopted child after years of struggling with his disabilities. She will have to continue with the struggles, but now she has information that will help her understand her son.

I know I will have an impact bringing a higher level of understanding of the victims of FASD.

Allen,
I agree, it IS everywhere. I am the adoptive parent of two children with FASD and the sister of 4 siblings that my parents adopted who were prenatally exposed to alcohol. My sister has an alcohol addiction and her two sons were both exposed. My friends who have adopted are living with FASD. It is all around me.

I have a blog at thoughtspreserved.blogspot.com if you'd like to read a little about our family. I hope you don't mind if I link to you once in a while! ~Kari

Hello, Allen,
I came across your blog through Kari's link to it and read it all with great interest. I've been asking pretty much that same question for at least the past year now and I also agree that it is epidemic—now that my eyes are opened and I'm well past the denial of my own husband being a victim of this.

I also agree that most people still seem unaware of it, although I think that is starting to shift a little, and awareness is very slowly beginning to grow.

Your "What Works" entries were very helpful. I'm guilty of speaking to my husband like that, and I know better.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you keep on writing about this.
